Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where can I ski in the Fargo-Moorhead area?
A: In Fargo there are trails at Edgewood golf course, Lindenwood Park and Dike East, Prairiewood golf course, and Rose Creek golf course. In Moorhead there are trails at Viking Ship/Davy Parks (adjacent to Hjemkomst Center), and MB Johnson Park.

Q: Where can I rent skis?
A: Fargo Parks rents skis at the Edgewood winter chalet http://www.fargoparks.com/facility_edgewoodchalet.html, and Scheels also rents equipment.

Q: How can I tell which trails have been groomed?
A: Follow us on Twitter "@SkiPENS" to get the latest trail grooming updates from PENS grooming committee members about Viking Ship/Davy park in Moorhead.  Fargo Parks employees post updates on their website http://www.fargoparks.com/facility_rectrails.html for Edgewood, Lindenwood/Dike East, Prairiewood, and Rose Creek. Moorhead and Viking Ship/Davy trail reports can also be posted on skinnyski.com.

Q: What are my PENS dues used for?
A: Dues are used to pay hosting fees for this website. We also purchased a Tidd-Tech Trail Tenderizer grooming implement and ABR tracksetter implement to groom at Viking Ship/Davy Parks, and we have purchased additional options for the Tidd Tech in 2011 to make the grooming even better (updated Sep 2011). Brochures, postage, facility rental for special events, and other such things are among items for which PENS dues are used.

Q: What is the PENS Yahoo! Group page and how do I join?
A: The Yahoo! Groups page is an electronic message board for PENS members to communicate about events, trail reports, and anything else related to PENS. Photos can be posted there as well. When you join PENS you will receive an email invitation from a Moderator to join the Yahoo! Group. You have to be a member of PENS and receive an invitation to join this group before you can post any messages.

Q: How can I get more involved with PENS?
A: There are several opportunities. One of the best is to help with the Clara Barton Elementary ski days. See the calendar on the main page for dates. You do not have to be an expert skier! Also, we are always interested in hearing from individuals who wish to help by serving on the PENS Board of Directors. For these and other opportunities send an email to greghaugen@pens-xcski.org

Q: What is the difference between the Ski Lessons and the Ski Technique Clinic?
A: The Ski Lessons (Sundays in January, 12:30-2:00pm) are given through the Fargo Park District. PENS Ski Instructors assist Fargo Parks to implement these lessons, and pre-registration and fees are required. http://www.fargoparks.com/aprog_ugo.html#skiing
The Ski Technique Clinics are a membership benefit to all paid PENS members and require no additional fees. PENS instructors will assist members in classic or skate techniques, beginner to advanced. These clinics are Sundays in January from 2:30-4:00pm at Edgewood. Those members wishing to participate should meet the Instructors (in the light blue hats with the orange PENS logo) by the fireplace in the Edgewood Winter Chalet at 2:30. Please see Events Calendar on main page and, if you would like to receive instruction at a clinic please let our instructors know by sending them an email at ski_clinic@pens-xcski.org
