Welcome to the home page of PENS! Prairie’s Edge Nordic Skiers (PENS) is a club for cross country skiing enthusiasts of all ages and abilities. Our goals are to bring local skiers together for social and educational activities, promote XC-skiing as a healthy activity to the greater community, and to promote better and more consistent trail grooming in the Fargo, ND and Moorhead, MN area.

-There are changes to the PENS website! Specifically the FORUM is going away. While it seemed like a good idea last year, the amount of spam traffic has been overwhelming, so it is being scuttled. Your options for keeping in-the-loop are to follow PENS on Twitter, check the calendar page of this website for events, and get back to the original Yahoo! Groups page for PENS. For those of you who weren't members in PENS prior to last year, the Yahoo! Groups message board was the main avenue for electronic communication among club members and it looks like we need to go back to the future with that one. Those of you who have participated in the Yahoo! Groups page before don't need to make any changes, but new PENS members will soon be receiving an invitation to join the Yahoo! Group. Watch for this email and sign up when you receive it.
-PENS and Paramount Sports in Fargo are hosting the first-ever Cross-Country Ski Expo on Saturday Nov 19th from 12 noon to 5pm. Come to Paramount Sports and check out the new ski gear for 2011-2012 and register for door prizes! Regional XC ski resorts have been invited to attend and will also be having drawings for items to be given away! See the event on our Calendar page as well. Paid Members of PENS can pick up their FREE SKI TIES at the event that day.
-Moorhead Parks has done a fantastic job of clearing trees and widening and flattening a new trail system at MB Johnson Park in North Moorhead! This is by the river down in the trees with significant wind-protection, and promises to provide some great skiing this winter! Stay tuned for grooming reports. Before the snow falls you should go for a walk and check it out. HUGE THANKS to the City of Moorhead and their Parks Department for these improvements! If you're a Moorhead resident, feel free to let your city leaders know how much you appreciate this. Look at the Photos page for some pics from Friday 11/11.

-PENS has been able to utilize funds generated from Memberships to purchase parts to improve our Tidd Tech grooming implement for the 2011-2012 season! We now have a 6-foot wide implement instead of 4-foot which will should allow for significantly better grooming at Viking Ship/Davy Parks in Moorhead this year.

-Are you serious about your training? Are you looking for some objective measures of just how fit you are, and how you can improve? Sanford Sports Medicine in Fargo has agreed to very generous pricing on VO2 max and Blood Lactate testing for PENS members! These normally cost $50 and $65 respectively, but Sanford Sports Medicine has offered to provide both tests for only $90 to members of PENS. See the "VO2 & Lactate Testing" page.
